Artistic Thoughts of the Week...
or Bits of Art Related Wisdom from Someone You Probably Shouldn't Be Taking Advice From

Artistic thought for the week:

Practice damnit! And then practice some more! Carry a a small pad or sketchbook & pen or pencil with you, sketch or take note of ideas. Doodle aimlessly. If you're not producing at least six sheets of scribble that get tossed or otherwise shoved into corners for each one picture you finish, you're not practicing enough! (Unless you're a really, really good artist in which case... why are you reading this?!?!?)

Never complete a picture at one sitting, do it in stages. Plan the layout, then put it aside for awhile. Come back to it later and inspect it again, you may have a better idea of how to fit things together after letting it sit. Sketch the character(s)/creature or the basic outline of your subject, then set it aside again. Look at it again later, problems in posing and proportion are more noticable if you haven't been staring at the drawing for awhile. Finally add the detail and clean up the drawing, set it aside a bit before inking/coloring/CGing or otherwise completing the picture. When you do feel the picture is finished, put it aside once more to distance yourself from it, then give it a last look, chances are you'll find something that can be added to give it that extra sparkle.
